Gen Z workers are showing little interest in waiting years for the next promotion. Many are preparing to change employers instead, and higher pay sits near the top of their wish list.

New research from Robert Half shows just how quickly that mood has changed. In September 2026, the talent firm reported that 55% of Gen Z professionals planned to look for another job before the end of the year. Only 32% said the same one year earlier.

Money helps explain the jump. Robert Half found that 53% of Gen Z professionals believe changing employers could offer greater earning potential. Among those planning a job search, 50% pointed to limited opportunities for advancement at their current company.

Gen Z Workers Are Moving Faster Than Older Generations

Vika / Pexels / Gen Z already has a reputation for short job stays, and recent research supports part of that picture.

A 2025 Randstad study examined workers during the first five years of their careers and found that Gen Z’s average job tenure was only 1.1 years.

Millennials stayed an average of 1.8 years at the same career stage. Gen X workers averaged 2.8 years, while baby boomers averaged 2.9 years. That gap shows how much early career patterns have changed across generations.

Official U.S. labor data also shows that young employees tend to have shorter job tenures. Bureau of Labor Statistics data for January 2026 put median tenure at 1.5 years for workers aged 20 to 24. Workers aged 25 to 34 had a median tenure of three years.

The reasons behind those short stays matter. Randstad found that Gen Z workers often move because they want career development and see limited paths forward in their existing roles. The research described their behavior less as casual job hopping and more as a search for growth.

Salary still carries serious weight, especially for workers early in their careers. An employee who starts at a modest salary may find that annual raises only move the number slightly. A new employer can sometimes make a much larger offer immediately.

Higher Pay Matters, but Gen Z Wants More Than a Bigger Check

The hunt for another job is not only about base salary. Robert Half found that 56% of Gen Z job seekers wanted stronger perks and benefits, while half cited limited advancement opportunities at their current workplace.

Health insurance ranked as the most valued benefit when Gen Z workers evaluated offers, at 65%. Flexible work schedules followed at 60%, while 53% valued access to a 401(k) savings plan. Professional training also appeared among the benefits attracting young workers.

AI has added another source of pressure. Robert Half found that 87% of Gen Z workers use AI for professional purposes, showing how quickly younger employees have adopted the technology.

Job Hopping Can Still Pay, but the ‘Easy Money’ Is Fading

Silver / Pexels / Switching jobs has long carried a simple attraction for younger workers, a new employer may offer more money than the current one.

Bank of America Institute data published in May 2026 found that switching companies was still associated with stronger pay growth for younger workers.

The advantage was particularly striking for Gen Z in Bank of America’s internal deposit data. Gen Z employees who switched companies saw after-tax wage growth at four times the rate of those who stayed with the same company. Millennials who switched saw their wages grow at twice the rate of workers who remained.

However, the wider job market is no longer behaving like it did during the hottest period of the post-pandemic hiring boom. Bank of America noted that the pace of wage gains from switching jobs has slowed during the past four years as the labor market has cooled.
