The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has worked with Customs and Border Protection to intercept more than 355,000 units of squishy toys that violated U.S. requirements at ports. That figure shows how easily questionable toys can enter a huge consumer market.

Parents do not need specialist equipment to make smarter choices. A careful look at the toy, its packaging, its smell, and the seller can reveal plenty. A few quick checks can help separate a properly made squishy from a suspicious copy.

Fake Squishies Can Hide More Than Poor Quality

Missing information makes it harder to trace the toy if a safety problem appears later.

Safety marks can also provide useful clues, but parents should not trust a symbol by itself. Depending on the market, packaging may carry marks or references connected with requirements such as CE rules in Europe, Japan’s ST toy safety scheme, or China’s CCC system for products covered by compulsory certification.

Counterfeiters can copy logos just as easily as they copy colorful packaging. Check that the company exists and that its safety claims make sense for the country where the toy is sold. Claims that look impressive but provide no manufacturer details deserve extra scrutiny.
