Chris Anne Affleck, Mother of Ben and Casey Affleck, Dies at 83

Helen Hayward

Chris Anne Affleck, the mother of Academy Award-winning actors Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck, passed away on June 2 at the age of 83. Her family shared that doctors diagnosed her with pancreatic cancer in December, and she spent her final months surrounded by loved ones. Beyond raising two Hollywood stars, Chris built a meaningful legacy through her work as a teacher, civil rights advocate, and passionate supporter of education.

Born Christine Anne Boldt in New York City in December 1942, Chris Anne Affleck graduated from Harvard University and dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching in public schools. She retired in 2008 after a long career focused on helping students learn and grow.

Her commitment to social justice also shaped her life. During the 1960s, she became one of the original Freedom Riders, a group of activists who traveled through the Deep South to challenge racial segregation and support civil rights efforts.

Chris later married Timothy Affleck, and the couple welcomed their first son, Ben, in 1972. Their second son, Casey, was born in 1975 around the time the family moved to Massachusetts, where Chris continued her teaching career.

A Strong Influence on Ben and Casey

Chris played an important role in shaping her sons’ early lives and careers. Ben Affleck once described his mother’s dedication to education and compared it with his father’s working-class background during a 2012 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“My mother taught public school, went to Harvard and then got her master’s there and taught fifth and sixth grade in a public school,” Ben said. “My dad had a more working-class lifestyle. He didn't go to college. He was an auto mechanic and a bartender and a janitor at Harvard.”

After Chris and Timothy divorced when Ben was 12, she continued supporting her son’s interest in acting. She helped connect him with her former Harvard roommate, casting director Patty Collins, who assisted Ben with auditions for commercials and television movies during his early years.

Support During Ben Affleck’s Oscar Success

Chris remained a proud supporter of both of her sons throughout their careers. She attended the 1998 Academy Awards with Ben and Matt Damon after they received a Best Original Screenplay nomination for the movie “Good Will Hunting.”

The pair later won the Oscar for their screenplay, creating one of the most memorable moments of their careers.

Reflecting on the award night, Ben told Vanity Fair, “We were sitting next to our moms when we won, and we hugged them.” He also said he wondered why people found it unusual that they brought their mothers to the ceremony.

Ben later won another Academy Award for Best Picture for “Argo” in 2012, while Casey earned the Best Actor Oscar in 2017 for his performance in “Manchester by the Sea.”

After her pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December, doctors gave Chris about six months to live. Her family shared that one of her biggest wishes was to see her grandson graduate from high school. She attended the graduation ceremony with her family on May 31 and died peacefully in her sleep two days later.

Chris is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey Affleck, and her five grandchildren: Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin, and Sam.

Her life reached far beyond her connection to Hollywood. Chris built a meaningful legacy as a teacher, civil rights advocate, and devoted mother. She dedicated her life to education, equality, and family values. Her support remained a constant source of strength for her children, who often spoke about the impact she had on their personal and professional lives.
